To that account, pledging to dress better and to further buoy one's style credentials is a resolution in which each of us can set out to accomplish in a myriad of ways. Having said that, what is it then that a true gentleman of style should consider adding to his list of 2017 style resolutions?
Perhaps any one (or all) of the following, which collectivelly see fit in championing and then further espousing upon the timeless virtues of permanent style through that of a creative mixture of illuminating sartorial anecdotes, well-regarded pearls of sartorial wisdom, and a few enterprising (albeit realistic) style resolutions that we all can all assuredly live up to and fulfill.
All but ensuring your 2017 will be both a touch more fashionable and a whole lot more handsomelty attired (not to mention characteristically charming), here’s 35 considered ways a gent can elevate his style while passing through 2017's involuntary New Year's resolution looking glass…
Never impulsively purchase anything on sale (nor online) that you would never buy at full price (i.e. shop smarter)
. II .
Invest in formal evening/sleep/leisurewear such as velvet house slippers and plush smoking jackets for they are the mark of a well-mannered gentleman of leisure…
. III .
…likewise goes for Goodyear-welted footwear, four season outerwear (ie. cotton trench coats), and immaculately sublime cashmere knitwear (all three of which will last for years to come)
. IV .
Always bear in mind that quality (heritage craftsmanship) trumps quantity (fast-fashion immediacy) as do natural fibres over that of (man-made) synthetics
. V .
Do not live vicariously (or enviously) through the (stylishly) filtered feeds of influential Instagrammers nor the (often questionable) authoritative word of any fashion publication/magazine…but do by all means take inspiration from those who mean well but in a manner that sees you carving your own unique path and acting out upon your own sartorial impulses and fanciful desires (rather then others)
. VI .
Always dress appropriately for the weather, season, and occasion at hand (simple in principle but often carelessly overlooked)
. VII .
Prioritize a proper (albeit comfortable) fit above all else and invest in tailoring/the specialized nuances of bespoke or made-to-measure garments in lieu of simple turning to the relative affordability and immediacy of ready-to-wear pieces…
Take up a new sport in the racquet, equestrian, or nautical/sailing realm and adopt any of their classic wardrobes into your own fashionable fold to further bolster your style credentials and finally carry through on the often made (but rarely carried out) fitness resolution that many amongst us routinely make (and break) come January
. XIII .
Put that handsome fountain pen to proper use by taking up traditional letter handwriting (fashioned upon monogrammed stationary and classic letterpress) to turn back the clock to a simpler, slower, and more refined age (not to mention to bask in the gentlemanly virtues that connotatively arrive with it)
. XIV .
Endeavour to accessorize with both caution and creative subtlety in mind (i.e. keep those bracelets and necklaces at a minimum and at bay gents) as good style does not shout but is quietly sophisticated in its considered nuances
. XV .
Take care of your clothing: Re-wax your (Barbour/Belstaff) jackets, re-shine/weather-proof and resole your shoes, store everything properly, brush your knitwear, dry-clean your formalwear (no more then 2-3 times per year) and restock your favourite wardrobe stalwarts (i.e. buy in multiples when you find a piece that fits perfectly) before they become beyond savings
. XVI .
Organize your wardrobe/closet by colour or occasional intent (ie. work, fitness, leisure) as this will make getting dressed easier on those days that you are feeling creatively stifled (i.e. tonally harmonious ensembles are sophisticated and always a safe bet)
. XVII .
Don’t be put off by colour and explore outside of the archetypical anonymity of black, grey, blue so as to not become too comfortable nor disenchanted by what may well become a personal form of stale style uniformity that is left creatively wanting
. XVIII .
In an effort to bolster your sartorial lexicon & further elevate your styling sensibilities, schedule time to read, comb-over and enjoy any manner of these gilded style tomes (one per month should suffice) as they will ensure you are properly apprised and armed with the knowledge and know-how to slowly master the classic nuances of a truly timeless form of style
Donate — or perhaps resell — anything in your closet that is unused, undervalued, or that was bought upon impulse to those in need, friends, or local thrift shops
. XX .
Adopt (tasteful) seasonal trends in moderation and incorporate them into your (dependable) personal uniform in small increments: It is a styling philosophy in which lies the creative key to living a sartorially resplendent life that toes the line between being tastefully sublime and that of being a slave to fashion
. XXI .
That said, do avoid (at all costs) giving in to trends that you are immediately put off by no matter how much coverage or “merit” is bestowed upon them by those in the know …
. XXII .
…but do not simply restrict yourself as consequence and thereby wallow in (or be complacent and mired within) your comfort zone
. XXIII .
All that having been said, pledge to (finally?) take inventory of, fill in the gaps present, and cleanse your closet/wardrobe with a minimalist’s approach to pared-back essentialism in mind (i.e. you won’t miss that third navy blazer)
. XXIV .
Keep in mind that having healthy skin is as important as a properly fitted suit in matters pertaining to good style, so use an SPF moisturizer every day as I assure you that your future self will both applaud and be eternally grateful for what is a small (but critical) effort on your part (i.e. prevention over cure)
When in doubt, err to overdress (rather then underdress) for any occasion (looking better then everybody else never hurts)
. XXX .
Remember that any style status quo and (sartorial) tradition is only worth preserving if it continues to have merit, serves a purpose, and reflectively honours our best qualities
. XXXI .
Do not be put off by wearing white — especially denim — year round (here's 16 ways how) as contrary to any popular or prevailing belief (i.e. no white after Labour Day) it is indeed a colour that is fashionably fit for year round utilization
. XXXII .
Take to heart the notion that a handsome bag further enriches a mans style and is (nearly) as important as a good pair of shoes (i.e. you should not discount it profound effects)
. XXXIII .
Dress to highlight your strengths (and bypass your weaknesses) while taking into account your height, weight, and lifestyle (i.e. stick to what works & what best flatters your unique physical attributes). For example…
Tall/Slim Gents: Invest in double-breasted suits and outerwear
Short/Portly Gents: Avoid horizontal stripes (which broaden your stature) & tonal looks (lack of division will make you appear shorter); vertical stripess will add height
Athletic/Muscular Gents: Opt for unscrutured/unpadded/unlined formalwear and casual essentials such as henleys and t-shirts
Every Body Shape: Single-breasted formalwear looks flattering upon all as do classics such as chinos and rollnecks (turtlenecks) amongst many others
. XXXIV .
Consider adopting the Danish ritual of Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) and its principle of enjoying life’s — and in this instance, fashion's — simple pleasures
. XXXV .
And, last but certainly not least, remember that the best fashion statement is making no fashion statement and that PERCEPTION DRIVES REALITY (so dress accordingly)
Resolutions, styling advice and sartorial anecdotes in hand, let us together resolve to making 2017 the year in which we collectively fashion ourselves into more highly cultivated and charming gentleman of irrefutable style who routinely cut the dashing figure of the most finely attired, well-mannered, and worldly men, fathers, brothers, uncles, boyfriends, and husbands that we always knew we could be!
Sounds simple right? For some it is and for others…well they must come to the realization that in due course of pursuing any such commendable feat that it is they who must truly desire (and actively pursue) change in order for any of it to become reality.
And it is with that in mind as well as the age old axiom that states, “ Every journey begins with one small steps!”, that I’ve come to firmly believe that we can accomplish just about anything we set out to given we first endeavour to maximizing our sartorial efforts and laying down a personal styling agenda and wardrobe foundation that is well grounded and fastidiously curated.
Why? Perhaps do to the prevailing notion that all else in life — your career, personal love life, etc — has a peculiar habit of falling in line (following suit) as consequence of having one’s style and wardrobe in proper order.
Could it be that simple? I’ll let you be the judge…
Happy New Years and all the best in 2017 to one-and-all!
