| Hello | Bonjour | Hola |
A thing or two about me…
:: About Me ::
First and foremost, hello, welcome, and thank you for visiting monk + eero — the modern gentleman's sartorial gateway to fine fashion, exquisite personal style and contemporary culture!
Now, who am I and what is the sartorial tone of monk + eero?
Well, my name is Lyle (some prefer to call me Eero) and I am a men's image consultant/stylist/model, freelance journalist, and lifestyle blogger hailing from Canada whose humble voice echoes throughout the myriad of sartorial briefings and lifestyle features that are strewn about my digital neck of the woods.
That having been said, and in speaking explicitly to that of my distinctive manner of dress as well as the prevailing tone of my journalistic musings therein, if asked to describe my tastes in style I would best describe my preferred aesthetic as being a carefully cultivated marriage of classic American Ivy-League prep meets the polished elegance of Euro/Riviera spezzato with an impetus on minimalism and a rakish modern sensibility underscoring it all.
A look that is endearingly reflective of my laid-back persona, rather quite flattering to my silhouette, and that makes me feel most comfortable (and capable) in my skin. Both easy-to-wear and timeless in its adaptable smart-casual utility, it is something that (in retrospect) immediately bespeaks unto my traditionalist leanings and romantic spirit. Howbeit, the telltale signature marks of my personal style can easily be found within what you could call the vaunted historical annals of menswear lore and (near) permanent fashionability — think timeless menswear staples such as well tailored (English & Italian) suits, blazers/sport coats, dark rinse (and white) raw denim and a fine array of heritage knits, outerwear stalwarts and (my signature pieces) hats alike (to name but a few choice selections).
Be that as it may, avid trend follower I am not but rather a quite risk averse individual (in matters strictly sartorial that is) who nevertheless does not shy away from venturing off-script — within tasteful reason of course — if the proper styling opportunity arises or presents itself. Consequently, I prefer taking well-calculated and properly educated risks as I go about living life with the belief that in everything I wear and decision I make — and individual I meet — there is something to be learned or discovered for better or worse, whether in failure or success (in every fluid and evolving facet of life).
Ultimately, this manifests into a professional M.O. that has me championing a sartorial discourse that ideally would see each of us pursuing an expressive yet comfortable form of personal style that is endearingly marked not only by a reflectively distinct and unique silhouette that best befits our character but also a cultivated gentlemanly refinement and enduringly charmed patina in which together function as that often elusive proverbial cherry on the top (as it were). In such a manner, I eschew the deplorable practice of distastefully unmerited (and reproachable) criticism, personal ridicule, and competitive/comparative analysis (all of which are so prevalent online today) as I do not believe these to be proper barometers, nor humane means, in which to measure one's style or to ensure his continued growth/personal development.
Because, whether arriving by means of intrinsic aptitude or cultivated virtuosity, I believe that our chosen form of dress and style symbolizes — defines us really — the different chapters (and decades) of our lives; it has a profoundly influential and lasting effect on how we both view ourselves (i.e. self-confidence) and are perceived by others, often bookends our daily routines, provides insight into our lifestyle preferences (entertainment, cuisine, et al.) and alters our habits and perceptive view of the world in a manner that comes to define our very lives and pursuits therein. Insofar as such, I'd go so far as to even proclaim that it alone often acts as a characteristically formative guiding principle (as well as the helping hand + deciding factor) in the immediate process of not only aiding in the crafting of our very personas but aesthetically defining nearly every life-defining opportunity (and milestone) that has or will cross our individual paths whilst we set out to navigate this vast, beautiful planet (be it finding a career/life partner/etc.) we call home.
My point being is that the way we choose to dress and fashionably equip ourselves daily — by means of both our aesthetic preferences and gentlemanly decorum — truly bespeaks unto how we view the world (and our position therein), what our life goals/aspirations/ambitions may be, what our tastes and desires play off as, and how much we respect and value ourselves (self-esteem + confidence) all on a deeply intimate and personal level. And, as such, this is why I believe that we should all choose to properly curate our signature styles' with purpose, taste and intent in mind, as this trident of barometers stand above all others in that they speak volumes (albeit nonverbally) about what matters to us and what we stand for as individuals to all those we meet — casual bystanders/strangers/first time acquaintances — before even a singular utterance of a word can sprout forth from our lips.
All that having been said, it should go without saying that it is my express desire to help you look and feel your best so that you can exude confidence and live life with sartorial aplomb. For you see, and after all, it is often that unexpected helping hand (or second opinion) that can help with the little (style) details in life that make all the difference…
About monk + eero…
monk & eero was founded upon the singular desire of providing aspiring sartorialists and modern gentlemen of style and substance alike, namely those who fancy nothing less in life than becoming the most highly cultivated, worldly and exceedingly refined versions of themselves sans the need to ever pander to the (oft tasteless) vicissitudes of trendy fashions that is, with both an inspirational lifestyle sextant to continually reference as well as a timeless sartorial blueprint to follow to which they could effortlessly toy with and bend to their every will, need and discerning taste with unfailing confidence.
To wit, it is for those amongst us who would be left rather quite unsatisfied or unfulfilled with anything less than always cutting a understatedly rakish dash in our preferred state of dress at all times; Those who desire not only establishing a heightened personal sartorial standard to answer to as well as a signature look to call their own that bespeaks unto a man of finer tastes but who also happen to be acutely aware that their is more to being a true gentleman than simply looking the proper part — that it is about cultivated mannerisms and comported civility going hand-in-hand with irreproachable gentlemanly decorum and uniquely unparalleled sartorial panache.
Be that as it may, the writing and features proffered herein strike a cord with that belief in being at once well-researched, historical, insightful and (hopefully) eloquently nuanced. Arriving courtesy of a seasoned professional standpoint that is knowledgable and academic yet accessible and practical all the same, I like to think (and have been commended upon) my writing being rather quite erudite yet nevertheless lively in its conveyance of a sense of excitement and sartorial verve for clothing and the pursuit of gentlemanly virtues.
To that end, what m+e ultimately does best is provide a varied (yet always sophisticated) palette of sartorial ideals, ideas and inspiration on not only what to wear, how to style classics and why you should own certain articles of clothing but also on how your sense of style extends far beyond what you wear as well as how you should carry and conduct yourselves as gentlemen everywhere you go.
Often touching upon whatever strikes my fancy at any given moment, my writing is ultimately a direct (and enthusiastic) reflection of my tastes, desires and passions, an expressive outlet, if you will, that I attempt to best leverage so as to tastefully illustrate my personal belief that what you wear should at once make you feel better about yourself, help you look more dashing, and allow you to operate with unwavering confident in all that you pursue; That your signature form of dress should have a sense of propriety about it yet still be elevated by an underlying contentment of self-fulfillment, invigoration, and compatibility.
With that in mind, I hope that monk + eero can prove useful in aiding your style journey whether as a niche sartorial menswear portfolio worth revisiting time-and-again for advice and inspiration or as a discerning shopping destination that offers a little touch of sartorially refined retail nirvana that is accentuated by referential pearls of wisdom everywhere one looks.
Howbeit, and at the very least, it is my desire that monk + eero can help the average man become a gentleman of true style and endearing substance — whether it be in his mannerisms or manner of dress.
Because I want you all to take to heart that yes you too can indeed become whomever you want to be and have everything you desire in life should you endeavour to putting in the due diligence and effort required by starting with (quite literally) putting your best foot forward on a daily (sartorial) basis.
And, as luck would have it, monk and eero was created with the sole purpose of helping you accomplish just such a commendable feat and lifelong pursuit…
